Easy 7-Day Sugar Detox Challenge

Let’s face it. Holiday celebrations are always a good reason to prepare foods that we enjoy. Nothing beats spending time with our loved ones while satisfying our cravings. However, if you’ve been feeling sluggish or depressed after having some holiday treats, you might want to watch out for what you eat. For all you know, you’ve been overeating sweets!

From the donuts that you grab on your way to the grocery for holiday shopping to the sauces for your turkey, ham or steak—they all have refined sugar, the addicting ingredient common in (supposedly) comforting but unhealthy foods.

If you think this describes the situation you’re in, it might be time to do yourself a favor. Get back to your Warrior Strong state and undergo a 7-day easy sugar detox plan. Here’s why.

Sugar: The Sweet Silent Killer

Part of having a Warrior Strong mindset is practicing mindful eating. We’ve all been warned by our doctors: Sugar is bad for our health, and here’s why:

Causes cavities

“Brush your teeth!” We’ve all been annoyed by this reminder from our moms before we go to bed and after we eat, and it’s because the food that we eat that contains sugar is mainly the one that’s causing cavities. Moms really know best as they give you a stern warning why you shouldn’t overeat candies or chocolates—it’s because sugar actually eats away the enamel on your teeth even while you sleep. Before you know it, you’re already suffering from pain because of tooth decay.

Results in weight gain

Foods high in sugar content have high calories but are low on fiber and other nutrients. Eating too much of them can naturally lead to weight gain. The Twinkie you decided to take from your desk’s lateral cabinet instead of having a decent, healthy lunch will only cause you to eat more as each Twinkie is only giving you a temporary fill for your hunger. Before you know it, you’ve finished the entire pack of Twinkies in your drawer by the time you finish your work report.

Leads to depression

Research has shown that more sugar in your diet may lead to anxiety and depression. So, while you have several scoops from a tub of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream to feel good and forget that you had a bad day, keep in mind that the comfort sugar brings is just temporary. It would be better to talk to another Warrior Strong woman in your life and tell her how your day went.

Causes inflammation and heart disease

High sugar intake can actually cause inflammation in the body. A high-sucrose diet can lead to chronic inflammation, which can stress your heart and blood vessels, increasing your risk of heart disease.

The Easy-Peasy Sugar Detox Plan

With all this bad news and only temporary euphoria caused by sugar, it’s time to rethink and revisit how you incorporate sugar into your diet.

While it is a given that sugar cannot be avoided, there is an easy-peasy sugar detox plan that you can start immediately, especially if you are planning for a healthier 2022!

Replace your cakes with fruits

I know, I know, because who doesn’t love cake? And who doesn’t want cake, especially when celebrating the holiday season? But, this doesn’t mean you can no longer have some sweetness in your life. Fruits are a great alternative to satisfy your sweet cravings. They are super-packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Blueberries, raspberries, apples and oranges are healthy alternatives that will give you more energy as you go through your day. An ideal serving of fruit a day is one cup or approximately 80 grams. You’ll be amazed at how you feel by the end of the week if you stick to this health plan.

Bring in the greens

Let’s be clear on this. We all know that vegetables hardly have any sugar content in them. However, let’s keep in mind that the canned ones have it in them. So, keep the cans away and have them fresh. Go for the greens that are also rich in fiber: kale, lettuce, and spinach. Whip up some salad for variety and use your favorite vinaigrette. Keep yourself in this zone, and you’ll soon find yourself light and less lethargic.

Go for the unsweetened

Keep the sodas and sweetened products away and go for unsweetened drinks like water or unsweetened coffee (love it black?). As for tea, honey is always a healthier sweetener for it. If you’re into healthy smoothies, you can also try our sugar alternatives.

Avoid canned and processed foods

A lot of canned products can also contain a lot of added sugar. For canned fruits, go only for those labeled with “packed in water” or “no added sugar.” Anything that says “sugar” or “syrup” on the label is something you will have to avoid.

Better sleeping habits

Studies have shown that people who lack hours of sleep tend to make less healthy food choices, which probably explains why you end up getting a Venti of that sweet Frappuccino after getting only 4 hours of sleep the night before. Besides, good sleeping habits are essential for your health. It increases your energy, focus, and concentration whether you’re at work or in school.
